May 15, 2019 - So... a lot's been going on in terms of abortion access, especially in the states of Georgia and Alabama and considering the makeup of the supreme court there's very good reason to be concerned. Alito, Thomas, and Gorsuch are firmly anti-abortion which means you're left with Roberts who's also extremely anti-abortion but has shown he cares about maintaining the legitimacy of the supreme court in the eyes of the public over all else and knows that ruling in favor of these laws would severely tarnish that public perception, and Kavanaugh who has no respect for women whatsoever but seemingly wants to improve his public image by presenting himself as more of a moderate than he actually is. That's not a good situation at all. And it's frustrating that there doesn't seem much to do but donate to organizations these judges already don't listen to and then be at the mercy of their ultimate decision that likely hinges on cherry-picking the arguments that already align with their current beliefs than examining the whole scope of the issue.
As I've always strived to demostrate with this comic, abortion is a multifaceted issue impacting all sorts of other issues that may initially appear unrelated. While the danger of this law should over time become obvious after its implementation, there are opportunities to make those associations more obvious through public action. Already Georgia is facing some pushback from the film industry and Alyssa Milano has begun promoting an extremely misguided sex boycott that has so many problems that maybe we can discuss further in the comments, but I do think an opportunity exists to really show Georgia this is unacceptable by targeting Georgia business like the film boycott has demonstrated, so here's
a list of companies based out of Georgia you may want to reconsider supporting, some like Cox may be really hard to boycott, but others like Delta Airlines, UPS, and Coca-Cola have a ton of alternatives you can use instead. Now most of these companies probably won't have their bottom line affected and hopefully there won't be blowback on their employees (it's not their fault they live there), but I think putting pressure on them to make a statement that in turn puts pressure on the government can be effective. Delta made a wishy-washy statement on gun control that pissed off the NRA and gun control advocates hailed as "good enough" and despite initially rescinding a tax break on jet fuel Georgia then quietly reversed its decision. We need Georgia to reverse its decision again and if it's not listening to its people, it's time to maybe make it listen to its businesses. At least that's my thinking, even if I end up being the only person trying not to buy things made in Georgia.
Anyway, the comic. Speaking of companies with problematic conservative ties, there's Coors Brewing, which was
strongly boycotted in the 1970s by the LGBT community and despite new management still has its
bigotted founders donating like the rich bigots they are. Dr. Gregory's friends haven't forgotten this.
Also we meet this storyline's patient. I'd wanted to do something discussing sex selective abortion. It's very rare, but frequently cited as a "thing" by the far right, so why not look at the issues with that argument? I'll probably discuss this more as the story progresses.
Not sure when the next update will be. I kinda wanna try getting these up once a week again. Tuesdays? But I don't want to be overly optimistic about it. I just felt with everything going on I really wanted to get at least this comic up.
