December 17, 2013 - Apart from finishing the highlighting, tonight's comic is almost on time. Hopefully, this can become a pattern, though I should say that winter's started which means I'm now paranoid I'll lose power/internet, so any delay may be weather related.
During October and the inescapable breast cancer campaigns, I did a lot of research on charities and while there are a ton of high profile charities focused on international adoption, there didn't seem to be any (at least high profile) related to domestic adoption, which seems odd considering that I'd imagine that there are tons of domestic adoption facilities that could use support. If people know of one I overlooked please comment in the blog, it's likely that some international agencies also send funds to domestic facilities, but no matter what it's still not as prominent as how closely associated Planned Parenthood is with abortion.
What I found about Planned Parenthood was also kind of interesting as it seems the organization is somewhat fragmented in terms of who one sends money to. You can support their national office or smaller state level branches, and while the national level and some state level branches are highly rated, other branches, usually in areas where abortion legislation is not widely supported, are not as well received, making me wonder if these areas unfortunately are forced to invest resources in services not directly related to helping women but rather increased security and fighting lawsuits. Ultimately one of the biggest problems I have with Planned Parenthood clinics is that they really should be a stop-gap solution trying to get more abortions performed in hospitals, but that never quite seems to be their interest. Until abortions are performed in hospitals more frequently I appreciate what they do, but the importance of this long term objective is what I'm mostly invested in and I'd like support to be going towards such an idea. It's important to me when giving to a charity that I know where the money is going instead of just blindly throwing money at a problem, and I think it's worth mentioning the amount of thought that should go into giving to charities during this giving season (not to discourage anyone from giving).
