November 12, 2013 - Maybe the relationship between Patience and Amanda isn't doomed?

New York Magazine just ran a piece where 26 women tell their abortion stories. One of the things I've always said I'm trying to do with the comic is personalize and individualize the circumstances women seeking abortions are going through. The decision to abort isn't an abstract concept it's an extremely personal one, involving unique circumstances for each person making such a choice. Far too few representations of abortion seem to remind us of this fact, and I definitely find the magazine piece interesting for showing just how varied circumstances and reactions can be. They're certainly not all positive, but neither are they all negative either. The most important thing is that they're real, which is something that my comic will never achieve as a work of fiction, and the reality of their situations and everyone else need to be remembered and considered when presenting hypotheses about abortion.
