August 20, 2013 - I guess I can start on this with a semi-related article about the decrease in funding for government sponsored pre-school programs. As the article notes, the results of the program are debateable with no significant impact on students by third grade, but it still raises the question of do we do enough for our children so that every pregnancy must be "preserved."

On a less broadly social note, it's come to my attention that there's been a spate of questionable ads up on the site (mostly those involving a particular "males only" online game, though I'm also generally suspicious of Asian themed dating services as well). I used to have a thread up on the message board specifically asking people to be vigilant about this, but I haven't visited the forum in months since instituting comment sections on individual pages which to me are much less of a hassle (but if people still want to use the forum they're welcome to, I just have actively decided to stop participating there, besides it was a ghost town anyway). So if you want to point out a suspicious ad, please e-mail me instead. In general I try to keep my filters on ads pretty lax so not to be accused of censorship, but ads that promote discriminatory ideas are not something I'm that interested in giving adspace to. This isn't to say I agree with every company that advertises here (I believe Victoria's Secret runs ads on my site and their "Pretty Bright Things" line was very problematic, but ultimately they just sell women's underwear (though why their ads are marketted more to men than women is highly questionable, I assume they make a lot of profit off clueless men buying their higher end items (possibly multiple times out of an inability to consult with their partners about size and then feeling embarrassed to return such products (though I don't really know what Victoria's Secret return policy is, a "no returns" policy wouldn't surprise me)), but that's just my own speculation because I otherwise can't really understand why a seller of almost exclusively women's underwear wouldn't do more to appeal specifically to women)) just that I don't obstruct advertisers unless there's rather significant evidence they're discriminatory.
