August 9, 2013 - Kick Ass was probably one of the worst movies I've seen in the past decade. It had a lot of potential to talk about complex themes like parental obligation and heroism but eschews all of them in favor of being gratuitously violent. I have no plans to see its sequel and only bring it up as a means to mention this article examining the frequency and insensitivity with which rape is used in comics. Obviously I'm trying to be sensitive to this issue with some of my storylines and I do believe such subject matter can be addressed responsibly, though as the article mentions I do think it can potentially be mishandled (and such problematic representations unfortunately happen rather frequently). On the flip side, it's encouraging to see an article probably read by more people than my own comic willing to talk about such an issue as these problematic representations and hopefully working towards bringing about change.
