July 15, 2013 - Eventually, we'll get to Mary's story.
This has been a rough week for America's government and legal systems. Friday marked the senate vote on
Texas' abortion bill which passed despite only being favored by 38% of Texans. The point of our representative government is supposed to be that they stand for the beliefs of the population and thusly only 38% of Texas government should have favored the bill instead of the opposite. It'll be interesting to see how the inevitable appeals go, not to mention my blind optimism that the politics in Texas can change.
Meanwhile, I have comics better suited for this discussion that are upcoming but George Zimmerman was found not guilty of any crime in the death of Trayvon Martin. Between weak prosecution and the current state of legal definitions of the potential crimes Zimmerman committed in Florida, I can't say I'm surprised by this result and by definition it may even been "justice" from a
strictly legal perspective. But I think the situation highlights many flaws in our laws that need to be corrected, and hopefully this case will motivate people to change these problematic laws. Honestly, I have difficulty believing Zimmerman would be found not guilty of any crime in many other states. It may be unclear whether he fired in self-defense or maliciously, but by stalking someone for no reason with a concealed weapon I think Zimmerman is hardly completely innocent. Overall I think this
article probably outlines my opinions on the matter the best.
