May 14, 2013 - I find it kinda fascinating the adjectives people use to describe others. Possitive or negative, they usually provide more information about the person using the adjectives than the person being described. An insult implies that someone feels insecure about that aspect of themself as does a compliment, one outlaying what one hopes doesn't befall them and the other revealing what one aspires towards. This said, I'm not really sure why Star gave Aaron this list. She knows Aaron will hate Rob no matter what and this just clarifies the difference between what he could possibly hear and how he'd translate it to what that means about Ellie.
Hope that made sense, I'm unfortunately coming down with something so I'm not sure how coherent I am. Can't really figure out a good transition to other stuff that's going on in the world, so I'm just gonna give up.
Kermit Gosnell was found guilty today, much to both sides of the abortion debate's relief. People opposing abortion rights glad to see an abortion provider put in prison, people supporting abortion rights glad to see someone with no concern for his patients put in prison. The real argument here seems to be that the opposition to abortion options wants to use Gosnell as an example that abortion is unsafe while those supporting abortion options want to use him as an example that abortion is unavailable. They're both right and if the opposition to abortion really wants to make abortion safer it needs to make it more available (so people like Gosnell get weeded out by higher quality competition) and if supporters of abortion rights want to make abortion options more available such options need to be provided in safe environments (which includes educating people about the procedures so that facilities are less likely to be harrassed and finding ways to meet legitimate medical concerns (though let's face it many concerns the opposition proposes are completely ludicrous)). I didn't really want to link to CNN with the Gosnell case as some of their video footage (which I'm not linking) is pretty biased with unnecessary commentary about the prosecutor's emotional reaction, but they also ran
this piece about the difficulty of poor parents to obtain diapers, showing that, despite claims to the contrary from so-called pro-life advocats, there really isn't enough support for struggling families. Abortion is not an alternative to parenting, but it's a frequent argument and this article reveals yet another flaw.
Also I wasn't a huge fan of
Brave. The script was a little heavy-handed at times and I couldn't help but feel there were missed opportunities of limiting the best characters (the witch and her crow) to one scene and not making the wisp a character itself as it plays such an integral role and I see no reason why it couldn't be personified. But
even Merida's creator is outraged over the redesign of the character for the Disney princess line, and I have to agree that the redesign goes against the spirit of the film. I understand this is a move calculated to maximize profit, but it seems to completely miss the idea of Merida's character that one wonders why even tie this rebranding to the original film (heck, the princess line already has an anti-feminist red-headed Caucassian in Ariel, they don't actually need another (disclaimer:
The Little Mermaid is actually among my favorite Disney films despite some of the obvious flaws with Ariel's characterization, Sebastian and the musical numbers are just too good and it's not like Prince Eric gives off that rapey vibe you get from
Sleeping Beauty and
Snow White in fact he goes from really impressed by a woman who had the courage to save her on his own to disinterested in one that makes a huge sacrifice (but maybe that's a commentary against people with disabilities, though he looks past that too -- blech, this rant is going on too long, Prince Eric is just kinda stupid to the point that you can't really read much into his character because he doesn't have one so I guess that makes him more of an object than Ariel which is a whole nother debate I'm not getting into right now))).
Anyway, here's James Marsters explaining the plot of
Brave if you haven't seen it (Sarah Michelle Gellar is playing the role of Merida):
