November 8, 2012 - Okay, so roughly 60% of women who have abortions already have a least one child, I therefore felt it important to introduce a patient that's already a mother.

The woman here is named Cora Nixon, and she's probably one of the more statistically common representations of the type of women who seek abortions presented so far in the comic. She's a mother. She's a minority. She's low income. And she understands that raising a child is very expensive. She really doesn't have a lot of options other than have an abortion or possibly lose her ability to work by carrying the pregnancy which will only make her life more difficult. Despite her difficulties, she's trying to care for the child she already has as best she can. I'm sure I'll talk more about her circumstances with future comics, but for now check out this cnn article, which unfortunately got buried under Hurricane Sandy coverage last week, that lays out many of the difficulties that Cora and women like her face as well as making suggestions for how such situations could improve.
