June 15, 2012 - Unfortunately, I still haven't modified the site the way I want it to look, and it's doubtful I'll get to it this weekend. Bleh. I hate that. Maybe by saying I won't do it, I'll find a way to get it done though.
Anyway, this comic is in reference to comments I got about the lack of professionalism regarding Star's hair color. I realize it's completely unrealistic to think a doctor would dye their hair such a color, but I can't imagine there's a rule against hair dye (especially natural colors). Plus if there were rules regarding such, they're likely worded in such a way that Star's figured out a way to exploit a major loophole by only dying the tips and leaving some of her natural hair color showing. This is also a work of fiction, and not the most accurate portrayal of how an abortion clinic operates, so I take some unrealistic liberties to emphasize particular ideas.
In addition to standing for an expression of individuality, her liberal stance in abusing oversights in a uniform code of conduct, and implying a certain lack of maturity, Star's hair also expresses an awareness that rules are only as strong as the penalties and consequences associated with not following them. Abortion providers are few and far between, and with such short supply, she's very aware she has no chance of getting fired so long as she keeps her medical license and stays out of prison (neither of which are going to happen on account of her hair alone). In the real world, she'd potentially lose business and possibly even hurt the reputation of the clinic, but for the sake of the comic, she's more interested in expressing her strong personality and considering my limitations on the rest of her appearance such as her wardrobe, I wanted to dye her hair kinda funky colors to make her confrontational attitude immediately obvious.
