August 23, 2012 - In general I've partially been avoiding some of the stuff surrounding Todd Akin, largely because I'm really uncomfortable with the fact that his opponent, Claire McCaskill ran ads actively trying to get him the nomination (reread the article I first posted Monday where it mentions the TWO MILLION she spent on campaign ads to make him win his primary) and continues to discourage him to not resign from the race for what appear to be more selfish reasons of wanting to win the race for herself than any concern for the people of Missouri. By now it appears clear that Akin isn't resigning and rather than dwell upon the poor state of affairs in Missouri, I'd like to make note of this excellent response from Eve Ensler that I really should have posted yesterday. I'd also like to draw attention to an interesting article from CNN that details that not only can rape result in pregnancy but at least 30% of rape victims do decide to give birth. Once giving birth, these victims have no legal right to deny child visitation to their rapists in THIRTY-ONE US STATES. Reporting a rape that results in pregnancy in these states thus gives the rapist a way to reenter his victim's life in at least 30% of cases. How comfortable can any woman be reporting a rape when the law inadequately protects her? Hopefully legislation changes soon because such policies are atrocious. | |||
